Once employed by the Mayan Indians for embalming, extracts from allspice leaves and berries have been used in folk remedies and herbal medicine to treat digestive disorders and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis and neuralgia. Herbalists and aromatherapists use allspice to treat nervous exhaustion, arthritis, menstrual cramps, flatulence, diarrhea and indigestion. Oil from the leaves has commercial and cosmetic applications as well, and is commonly found in men's cologne. Allspice essential oil is used in aromatherapy to lift your mood and reduce fatigue.

The team noted that the mice treated with eugenol experienced significantly less inflammation and improved lung function over the control group, and noted that eugenol's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects stemmed from the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
